Research Assessment Exercise
The RAE Process
The Quality of research undertaken in UK Universities is assessed periodically in a Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). There have been five RAEs to date, with a sixth taking place in 2008. As well as assessing the quality of UK research, the RAE is used to inform the distribution of public funds for research by the four UK higher education funding bodies. Submissions are subdivided into subject areas (called 'units of assessment) and for the 2008 RAE submissions from universities will be assessed by experts in some 70 units of assessment. The main assessment will take place in 2007-08, with outcomes to be published by the funding bodies in December 2008.
For more detail on the RAE process see the RAE 2008 website.
The Department of Design and Innovation and the RAE
The Department of Design and Innovation has submitted to the 'Art and Design' Unit of Assessment in successive Research Assessment Exercises and achieved a ‘5’ rating in the 1992, 1996 and 2001 Research Assessment Exercises. The Department is submitting to the same unit of assessment for 2008. The submission includes research outputs, such as publications, statistics on research grants and research studentships, and evidence of our research esteem and standing.
Our major refereed research publications since 2001 are available in the Design and Innovation section of the University's Open Research Online site.
