Affiliated Research Centres

The Affiliated Research Centres (ARC) partnership is for institutions who undertake research and have staff capable of supervising research students, but do not have research degree awarding powers. ARCs have an agreement with the Open University to register students for an OU research degree whom they supervise and train using appropriately qualified staff. The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) became an ARC in 2008. DDEM is the link Department, with Professor Stephen Potter in the Design Group as the TRL's link academic. We hold annual networking and training events to support the TRL. We also engage in joint research and other linked activities, which included TRL participation at the Universities' Transport Studies Group conference that we organised at the Open University in January 2011.

TRL/OU Electric Vehicles Seminar, November 25 2011

This year our annual networking event was a seminar and meetings around the research that the OU and TRL are conducting on the introduction and use of electric vehicles. The OU are part of the Milton Keynes Electric Vehicle project. Stephen Potter gave an overview of this and Miguel Valdez and Abu Atchulo gave presentations on their linked PhD projects.

TRL/OU Student-Supervisor Forum, November 10 2010

The annual forum was held at the Open University on November 10th and combined work-in- progress presentations from students of both institutions and two trainings sessions. There was also a site visit to the University's acoustic research facilities.
