Atelier-D:
Achieving Transformation, Enhanced Learning and Innovation through
Educational Resources in Design
Course
Delivery Innovations
'Course delivery innovations' (or CDIs) refers to six small-scale
research projects that aim to explore the use of different Information
Communication Technologies (ICT) in the delivery of distance design
education, each focussing on different aspects of the atelier.
Since the foundation
of the OU in 1969 a diverse range of students from teenagers to those
retired from fulltime employment have engaged with a study of the
principles and practices of design through various incarnations of
parttime distance education courses. They have benefited from the
OU’s proven systems for student support through its high quality
teaching materials, a nationwide network of Associate Lecturers, and
its use of day schools and summer schools for face-to-face contact
with peers and tutors.
More recently,
design courses have included online conferencing, bespoke and off the shelf
software and interactive video. Some of these design course materials
have been made publicly available via Open Learn, the OU’s Open
Content initiative, and through Apple’s iTunes U service. This
proposal expands the scope of these delivery mechanisms.
