Chris joined the department in October 2002 to undertake a part-time PhD on the design of the distribution system for hydrogen-powered vehicles. He is a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) and member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET). He is being supervised by Stephen Potter, James Warren and Stephen Peake.

Working for many years on gas separation and transportation systems for industrial applications, he is currently researching the issues associated with developing a Hydrogen supply infrastructure that will be needed for any future Hydrogen based economy for vehicle fuels.

Specific interests are the costs, efficiency and environmental issues associated with such a system and how the infrastructure can make the transition from large scale centralised production to small scale localised production hence shortening the supply chain.

PhD Research Project

My PhD project is exploring the economic, energy and environmental feasibility of a Hydrogen fleet vehicle infrastructure [link to project presentation]. Current work includes carrying out case study research work on the Hydrogen supply infrastructure associated with the European wide Clean Urban Transport for Europe (CUTE) project as part of the PhD course.

Curriculum Vitae

2006 to present: Penspen Ltd consultancy. Control systems engineer working on gas pipeline projects in North Africa. Including Burner management systems for fired heaters.

2005 to 2006: Bechtel Oil and gas Ltd. Deputy lead engineer on Control systems for a new $5bn gas treatment plant at Khursaniyah in Saudi Arabia.

1983 to 2005: Air Products Ltd. Control systems engineer working on numerous gas separation projects worldwide. Including Hydrogen production and purification facilities as well as gaseous Hydrogen supply pipelines.
